Earth day sucks. It’s harmful.

It provides a cop-out, marketing-based, feel good way for people and companies to feel good about half-assed lame excuses for making a real sustainable difference.

Every day should be earth day. This one-day-per-year stuff is garbage. This “oh! what did you do for earth day?” feel good crap doesn’t help. Frack off. Every fracking day is earth day. What did you do for EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR earth day?

Just like striving for “carbon neutrality” isn’t going far enough. We’ve got to start undoing a half century of crapping all over this planet, and these silly Hallmark™ sound bite gestures just don’t cut it.

Yeah, awareness is good. But, really, who needs to have their awareness raised? This is 2008. This is post-Inconvenient-Truth. This is not news to anyone who can or will do anything about it. Can we stop the silliness now, and just assume that saving the earth should be a mainstream, full-time activity and not some stupid annual event? The “Green” issue of Vogue. The “Green” episode of $stupidTVShow. The celebrities touting their guilt-salving charity work. Ridiculous.

As long as we have countries spending a trillion dollars on wars to secure cheap gas for SUVs, all the weak gestures in the world don’t amount to a hill of beans. As long as we have countries willing to strip mine entire provinces to extract petroleum to keep the economy booming, switching a few light bulbs isn’t going to make much of a difference.

Right with you Borg! I refuse to let my boys participate in their boy scout earth day clean ups. They should be picking up trash trail side on every hike and outdoor activity they do. Not just April 22nd. Just one qusetion though. Have I been incorrectly dating my checks or is it 2008 still? Four more years of Obama, damn....

You're right, It won't make much of a difference in "greening" the world BUT it will make a huge difference to the bottom line of the guys that make the light bulbs.

I do agree that we need to stop raping and pillaging the earth and "Earth Day" is a corporate/government trick to pass the blame on to the masses and away from them.

There are real problems that need to be solved. Using fossil fuels isn't causing global warming. The earths temperature has been fluctuating for millions of years before humans even existed and it will continue. Using fossil fuels does cause disease in anything that breaths. It turns pure, sweet rain into acid that kills forests and poisons our rivers and lakes. BUT we don't need to stop using them. We need to concentrate efforts on finding ways to extract them from the earth and use them without causing harm.

We must stop using toxic chemicals to make our lawns and gardens green and weed free. We dump chemicals to control insects without thought to harm they may cause to other living things that will come in contact. Waste from farm animals is being washed into our waters and causing huge problems. We are harvesting fish at such a rate that many of the food species are in danger of extinction. I could go on but I think that I've made my point.

Passing the buck by telling me that which light bulb I use, which car I drive, which politician or celebrity I listen to will solve all of our problems seems to be all the effort going into the fix. As long as there is money and/or political gain to be had solving the problem will never be realized.
